We have been working on giving all Icelanders their health data digitally for the past 2 years in Iceland. It is one of the goals of the Directorate of Health in Iceland, by 2020 all health data will be downloadable and accessible by the individual.

Every Icelander will be able to download a secure copy of their health data from the Icelandic Healthcare systems. This is a big deal, not many countries even have the legislation to support this, not Iceland we are probably one of the first countries to legislate the right of personal health data. It is mandated in the Icelandic constitution that every Iceland owns their health data, this includes the genomic data.

Our partners Digi.me have a GDPR compliant solution out of the box, it is extremely important for us to make sure that the security and privacy of the individual is maintained in giving their health data back to them. The application has gone through stringent security audits by independent security audit companies mandated by the Directorate of Health. Digi.me is the preferred application through which individuals should download their health data. Digi.me does not see, touch or store your data. You data is doubly encrypted and stored in a data source that you control. Read more about Digi.me’s Privacy and Security Approach and Policy

You can try it now, if you are an Icelander all you need is an iOS or Android Mobile device and an SIM card that is authenticated with Audkenni (You can find instructions to enable that for your phone here.) and access to your cloud account (DropBox, Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive).

  1. Go to the App Store or Google Play Store
  2. Search for Digi.me (or click here for iOS and here for Android)
  3. Download the app
  4. Wizard will walk you through the setup
  5. Pick Iceland Health when you come to the Health Data Source selection screen
  6. Authenticate through your phone and let the data synchronize

You should be able to see the following:

  1. Prescriptions
  2. Medications
  3. Allergies
  4. Vaccinations
  5. Visits to the Health centers and Hospitals
  6. Doctor Appointments
  7. Medications that was given to you while you were admitted in a Hospital

More self entered data is available if you have access to Heilsuvera and you have been tracking your Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar levels, Height, Weight etc in that portal. We believe the first step in taking control of your health is to first know what health data is available and is already captured about your health in the health system. We live in a country which is already on the right track to enable everyone to take ownership of their own health. We believe this approach of giving access to health data and empowering the individual to see and understand what their condition is the best way to improve the healthcare system.
